Using the toilet independently is one of the most significant school readiness challenges facing families and schools, with many children still developing this important skill before starting school.
With Reception just around the corner for many children, Best Start in Life has launched a Toilet Training campaign to support parents of children aged 3 to 4 who are due to start school this September. The campaign reassures parents that there is still time to help their child build confidence and independence with using the toilet before their first day at school.
The link below provides practical advice to help children develop the skills they need for school, from recognising when they need the toilet to managing clothing, wiping, flushing and washing their hands using the below steps.
5 practical steps to potty training
1. Tell your child what’s happening
2. Stop using nappies during the day
3. Help your child use the potty or toilet regularly
4. Praise their efforts
5. Help your child build confidence with new skills
The advice is available on the NHS Best Start in Life website, alongside a wide range of free information and resources to support families from pregnancy through to starting school.
